Compare the two artworks in terms of techniques, use of colour and subject matter.
Subject Matter:
*The Horse is a realistic representation of a horse.
*The Man has been distorted to a point of obvious impossibility in real life.
-However, there is some reference to real life object.
*The Horse is a realistic representation of a horse.
*The Man has been distorted to a point of obvious impossibility in real life.
-However, there is some reference to real life object.
Techniques:
*The technique used to render the subject matter is hyper realism. This is seen in the tints and shades used as well as the main structure and contour of its face that relates to a real life horse.
*Dali uses more of a trompe l'oeil technique for the subject matter. This is due to the excrescence of arms and legion of auto-strangulation present where it can only come from his imagination.
Techniques: Use of symbolism
*To Hartini, Horses represent gentleness and virility and earth and sea represent dynamic interacting forces of nature. It creates interpretation and is personal to the artist.
*Dali uses the hideously diseased hands and feet to show the actual horrors of the spanish civil war.
Colour:
*Both mainly use blue and yellow hues.
Colour:
*Hartini excessively uses strong bold colours. This destroy the sense of depth in the artwork.
*Dali uses a more subtle palette and exudes a coherently calming feel. Colours, tones and shadows give emphasis where necessary and creates pictorial space and depth.

Ten things that make this work a realistic representation:
1. Subject matters are drawn with great detail
-presence of veins on the hand
2. Use of local colour portraying accurately the actual colour and tonal values of the skin.
3. Relates to the nature of work for people in Philippines at that time
4. Reflects hardship (with the dark hands with protruding veins- that show sun-burned and overworked hands) is a form of Socialist Realism: Reaches out to the general public and reflects truth.
5. The subject matter is consciously democratic (Relating to social classes regarded as unworthy of representation in higher art
6. Rendered based on the impartial observation of life. It expresses Asia's grapple with modernity, independence and modernity and nationhood with the dark background used to represent a bleak future for the old. This contrasts to the white rice which is their source of hope and strength.
7. There is perspective with the tones and highlights used. It looks Three dimensional.
8. It rejects idealized academic styles in favor of everyday objects.
9. Realism is used to enhance sensitivity to things people usually sweep past. There is separation of the subject matter from the surroundings is clear and is not embellished, making a stark appropriation of the matter.
10. "true to life" manner of juxtaposing the three sets of hands in chronological order of how people use their hands to eat.
Hahah, thought this looked like Mrs Tay:D Classical Realism.
